When I left the military, I was worried. Not just about adjusting to civilian life, but about the direction everything was heading. I needed to do something with my hands, something real. So I bought land and started homesteading—learning to grow food, fix things, and build from scratch.

Pretty quickly, neighbors started asking if I could help with their projects. A barn roof here, a shed there. I said yes because I knew how to do the work right. No cutting corners, no rushing to the next job. Five years later, those small asks became a business. Grand Design wasn't planned—it grew from people trusting me to build the way I build for myself.

What separated us from other builders wasn't marketing or a slick pitch. It was that we actually showed up, actually finished jobs on time, and actually stood behind our work. We'd learned traditional building methods alongside new techniques because sometimes the old way is the right way, and sometimes the new way does it better. That mix became our thing.

What We've Learned

Pricing matters, but not the way most people think. When we first started, I undercut everyone. Customers appreciated it, but they didn't trust us yet. Once we raised our prices and actually explained what we were doing—the materials we sourced, the time we spent planning—people got it. They saw value instead of just cost. Fair pricing builds relationships. Cheap pricing builds nothing.

Reliability beats talent. I've worked alongside guys with fancier certifications who couldn't show up at 7 a.m. consistently. We show up. We finish. We communicate. When you tell a client Tuesday and deliver Wednesday, they remember that. When you do it five times in a row, they trust you with bigger projects. That trust is everything.

Building things with values matters. We're conservative, military-minded folks. That shows up in how we work—with discipline, integrity, and no excuses. It also shapes what we build. Modern rustic isn't just a style we landed on; it's the marriage of old-school durability with current craftsmanship. It's timeless because it doesn't chase trends.
